When I was six or seven I was playing in a trailer park with my friend, Terri Reyburn. She lived with her mom and sister, and I knew they didn’t have much money. Her mom worked at a Holiday Inn, in housekeeping, and I’d go over and keep Terri company when her mom was away.

So we were playing hide-and-seek and Terri, who always made me laugh, went off somewhere to hide. When I went to look for her I was checking out the yard in the middle of the complex, looking behind benches and planters and things.

Then I saw the dark man. I saw him even though he wasn’t there. What I mean is I saw him in my mind, only it was more than that. It seemed more real than even the things I could see right in front of me. I knew something then. I knew that this man was right outside the complex. I knew he was moving fast. And I knew he was coming for Terri.

I got scared. I called, “Terri!”

No answer.

I closed my eyes and concentrated real hard. I could see the man even better now. He was dark and ugly and gross. I could see he was coming up the alleyway on the east side of the complex. It was like a movie scene in my mind. And then the movie shifted, the camera panned, and I saw Terri squatting behind a Dumpster. She was smiling. She probably heard me call her name and was secretly enjoying the fact that I couldn’t find her.

I ran as fast as I could to where the Dumpsters were. Again I called her name, and again there was no answer. I ran all the way to the Dumpster I’d seen in my mind and found Terri exactly where I knew she would be.

She looked up at me and said, “No fair! Somebody told you.”

“Come on,” I said. “We have to get out of here.”

“How come?”

I looked around the Dumpster down the alley. And saw him. The man. He was coming toward us.

I jumped out and shouted, “Help!”

The man stopped. He was about twenty yards away. Close enough that I saw his eyes. They burned yellow. I thought for a second he was going to run right at me, try to choke me or something. Finish me off, then Terri, then throw us both in the Dumpster.

But he got spooked and turned around and ran away.

But that was not the weird thing. The weird thing was what happened next.

It was a clear, sunny afternoon. Not a cloud in the sky.

But right at that moment, as the man was running away, it started to hail. That’s right. Big chunks of hail fell right there in the alley, clunking me on the head. The chunks of ice were the size of marbles.

Or eyeballs. Because that’s what they turned into. A shower of eyeballs, frosty and hard, and every one of them seemed to look at me.

They bounced on the asphalt.

Terri shouted, “What’s happening?”

I grabbed her hand and we ran back to her place.
